Introduction
The topics in this section describe how to prepare Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) for deploying Office Communications Server 2007 R2.
Prepare Active Directory DS
Active Directory can be prepared by using either of the following tools:
- SetupSE.exe (for Standard Edition server) deployment tool
- LcsCmd.exe command-line tool
These tools are provided on the Office Communications Server CD.
To run Active Directory preparation tasks on computers running 32-bit operating systems, you must use the 32-bit version of the LcsCmd.exe command-line tool, which is included in the 32-bit version of OCScore.msi. You can find the 32-bit version of OCScore.msi on the installation media in the \support\i386 folder. If not already installed install vcredist_x86.exe (located in the same media).
The following table shows the administrative rights and roles required for each Active Directory preparation task.
Procedure | Required administrative rights or roles |
Schema preparation | Member of Schema Admins group |
Forest preparation | Member of Enterprise Admins group for the forest root domain |
Domain preparation | Member of Enterprise Admins or Domain Admins group |
AD Schema Preparation
Schema preparation is the first step in preparing Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) for Office Communications Server 2007 R2.
The schema preparation step extends the Active Directory schema to include classes and attributes that are specific to Office Communications Server. It is run once, against the schema master, for each Active Directory forest where you plan to deploy Office Communications Server.
If you need to extend the Active Directory schema on a domain controller running a 32-bit operating system, or if you need to run the schema preparation step on a domain controller that is not the schema master, you can use the Ldifde.exe tool to import the schema file.
1. Log on as a Schema Administrator on the forest root domain.
2. Open a command prompt.
3. Copy Schema.ldf (from OCS2007 R2 media) in C:\windows\system32.
4. Run: ldifde –i –v –k –s [schema master name] –f schema.ldf –c DC=X “DC=IT,DC=NET”.
5. Validate that the command was successful:
i. Run adsiedit.msc from the command line.
ii. On the Action menu, click Connect to.
iii. In the Connection Settings dialog box under Select a well known Naming Context, select Schema, and then click OK.
iv. Under the schema container, search for CN=ms-RTC-SIP-SchemaVersion.
If this object exists, and the value of the rangeUpper attribute is 1008, then the schema was successfully updated and replicated.
If this object does not exist or the value of the rangeUpper attribute is not equal to 1008, then the schema was not modified or has not replicated.
AD Forest Preparation
Forest preparation is the second step in preparing Active Directory Domain Services for Office Communications Server 2007 R2.
The forest preparation step creates the following objects for use by Office Communications Server:
- Active Directory Global settings and objects
- Active Directory Universal groups
Forest preparation must be performed once for each Active Directory forest where you plan to deploy Office Communications Server 2007 R2.
1. You must be a member of the Enterprise Admins group for the forest root domain to perform this procedure.
2. Open a command prompt.
3. Run: LcsCmd /Forest /Action:ForestPrep /global:system /groupdomain:IT.NET, If you do not specify the /groupdomain parameter, the value defaults to the local domain.
4. Validate that the command was successful, Run: LcsCmd.exe /forest /action:CheckForestPrepState
The following steps describes the forest preparation step using SetupSE.exe deployment tool.
Run SetupSE.exe and select Yes.
Select IT.NET as domain.
Select default SIP domain
AD Domain Preparation
Domain preparation is the final step in preparing Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) for Office Communications Server 2007 R2.
You can run domain preparation on any computer in the domain where you are deploying Office Communications Server. You must prepare every domain that will host Office Communications Servers or users.
- Logon as Enterprise Administrator or a Domain Administrator on the child domain.
- Open a command prompt.
- Run: LcsCmd.exe /domain /action:DomainPrep
- Validate that the command was successful, Run: LcsCmd.exe /domain /action:CheckDomainPrepState
